Giants prospect Luis Matos went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI at Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.
Matos' disappointing season last year caused him to fall off many top 100 prospects lists, but the 21-year-old is having a fantastic turnaround season. Matos began the year at Double-A Richmond, and after hitting .304/.398/.443 with three homers and nine stolen bases, the Giants rewarded him with a promotion to Triple-A Sacramento. In 108 plate appearances in Triple-A, he is hitting .390/.430/.610 with four homers and five steals. He was added to the 40-man roster last November and could provide an impact in the second half of the season.
Brewers prospect Sal Frelick went 0-for-3 with one run scored in an Arizona Complex League game on Friday.
Frelick underwent surgery to repair a torn UCL in his left thumb in late April. He is still a few weeks away from returning to Triple-A Nashville but could be an impact call-up during the second half of the season.
Dodgers prospect Emmet Sheehan was promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday.
Sheehan has emerged as one of the top pitching prospects in the minors this season. The 23-year-old right-hander's 1.86 ERA and 88/23 K/BB ratio over 53 1/3 innings prompted the Dodgers to reward him with the promotion. With the multitude of injuries to the Dodgers rotation, he could make a fantasy impact in the second half of the season.
An MRI on Angels' right-hander Ben Joyce revealed no structural damage to his UCL on Saturday.
Phew. He will be shut down from throwing, but it's not considered to be a long-term injury. The 22-year-old right-hander has been impressive since getting the call from Double-A Rocket City, posting a 4.50 ERA and 2.25 WHIP while averaging over 100 mph on his heater.
Elias Diaz was lifted from Saturday's game against the Padres after taking a foul tip to the mask.
Rockies manager Bud Black said that Diaz went through concussion tests and is doing well. The 32-year-old backstop might sit out Sunday's finale but is expected to be okay.
Mauricio Dubón went 2-for-5 with one RBI and two stolen bases in the Astros' 6-4 win over the Guardians.
The 28-year-old has seen more playing time recently and is making the most out of it. Dubón is hitting .382/.371/.559 in June and is batting leadoff for Houston. With Yordan Alvarez on the injured list, he should see regular playing time in left field. He would be an excellent pickup off the waiver wire for fantasy managers looking for help in the batting average category.
Harrison Bader (hamstring) took batting practice on the field before Saturday's game.
Bader has been running, hitting, and throwing without discomfort and took live batting practice before Saturday's game against the Red Sox. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the team hasn't determined if the 29-year-old will need a rehab assignment before being activated from the injured list. Still, they expected to make that determination within the next few days.
Julio Rodríguez blasted his 12th home run of the season on Saturday, helping to power the Mariners to a 6-2 victory over the Angels in Los Angeles.
The 22-year-old superstar opened the scoring in this one with his 421-foot (104.6 mph EV) two-run blast off of left-hander Patrick Sandoval in the third inning. He also added a pair of singles in the contest -- finishing the night 3-for-5. His early-season struggles are a thing of the past now as Rodríguez is slashing a healthy .250/.310/.448 to go with 12 homers, 36 RBI and 12 stolen bases through his first 61 ballgames.
Patrick Sandoval was tagged for five runs on 10 hits over five innings in a loss to the Mariners on Saturday night.
On the plus side for fantasy managers, the Angels' southpaw piled up eight strikeouts on the night and didn't issue a free pass. The Mariners got to him for three runs in the third inning -- including a two-run blast off the bat of Julio Rodriguez -- and tacked on two more on a pair of run-scoring singles in the fourth inning. Sandoval got an eye-opening 20 swinging strikes on 102 pitches in the ballgame, posting an elite CSW of 39 percent. The 26-year-old hurler will bring an underwhelming 4.52 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 48/25 K/BB ratio (63 2/3 innings) into Friday's matchup against the Royals in Kansas City.
Shohei Ohtani clubbed a two-run homer on Saturday night, but it wasn't enough to power the Angels to victory over the Mariners.
Ohtani got the Angels on the board in the third inning, clobbering a 400-foot (103.0 mph EV) two-run shot off of Mariners' right-hander Bryan Woo. That would wind up being the extent of their offense in the ballgame. Ohtani finished the night 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts. On the season, the two-way superstar is slashing a tremendous .281/.355/.570 with 18 homers, 46 RBI and nine stolen bases in 64 games.
J.P. Crawford went 4-for-5 with a double, run scored and an RBI as the Mariners topped the Angels on Saturday evening in Los Angeles.
Crawford got a rally started with a one-out single off of Patrick Sandoval in the third inning and rode home on a two-run blast by Julio Rodriguez. He then added a run-scoring single of his own in the fourth inning -- extending the Mariners' lead to 5-2. With the four-hit attack, Crawford is now slashing .249/.351/.349 with three homers, 23 RBI and one stolen base on the season.
Eugenio Suarez went 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Mariners triumphed over the Angels on Saturday night.
Suarez delivered an RBI single in the seventh inning that extended the Mariners' lead to 6-2. He also led off the fourth inning with a single and dashed around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Tom Murphy. The 31-year-old's bat has started to show some signs of life -- as he's now slashing .216/.315/.323 with six homers, 36 RBI and one swipe on the year.
Red Sox' manager Alex Cora confirmed after Saturday's loss to the Yankees that Kutter Crawford will remain in the team's starting rotation.
It doesn't come as a major surprise, as the Red Sox are left with a major hole to fill in their rotation with Chris Sale sidelined for a matter of months, so it makes sense that Crawford will get a real shot here. The right-hander has registered a 3.68 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and a 36/6 K/BB ratio over 36 2/3 innings in 12 appearances (four starts) on the season. He's worthy of a look in any deeper mixed leagues where he still may be available.
Trevor Rogers was scratched from his minor league rehab start on Saturday due to discomfort in his non-throwing shoulder.
At least it isn't an issue related to his biceps -- or anything else on his throwing arm. This will delay Rogers' potential return to the Marlins' rotation though. Look for another update on his status after the Marlins see how he's feeling on Sunday.
Aledmys Díaz went 3-for-4 and delivered the go-ahead single in the 10th as the A's edged the Brewers 2-1 on Saturday.
Díaz also had a double. He was the only player on either team to have a multihit game today. Thanks to his first three-hit game of the year, he's now batting .208/.258/.271 with 10 RBI in 155 plate appearances.
Tanner Houck pitched well in a losing effort against the Yankees on Saturday, surrendering two runs on three hits across six strong innings.
The right-hander piled up six strikeouts on the evening while allowing only one base on balls. All of the damage done against him came via the long ball -- as Gleyber Torres clubbed a solo homer in the fourth inning and Willie Calhoun added one of his own in the sixth. Houck got 14 swings and misses on 93 pitches in the contest -- seven of those on his slider -- while registering a CSW of 33 percent. He'll look to get back in the win column as he brings a 5.23 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and a 62/22 K/BB ratio into a rematch against these same Yankees at home on Friday.
Rafael Devers homered for the second consecutive game on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to power the Red Sox to victory over the Yankees.
Devers got the Red Sox on the board and tied the game at 1-1 with his 417-foot (108.4 mph EV) solo shot off of Domingo German in the sixth inning. That would be the extent of the Red Sox' offense in the ballgame. Devers finished the night 1-for-4 with a strikeout and is now hitting .247/.301/.498 with 15 long balls and 52 RBI on the season.
Julio Teheran pitched seven innings of one-run ball against the A's on Saturday.
Teheran has made four starts for the Brewers and allowed a total of five runs, four of which were earned. He's not a mixed-league guy, but it looks like he'll be in the rotation for the long haul.
Clay Holmes closed out the Red Sox in the ninth inning on Saturday, preserving a two-run advantage to earn his eighth save of the season.
Holmes took over with the Yankees leading 3-1 in the ninth and he made sure that it would stand up. After striking out Jarren Duran to start the inning, he did allow a one-out single to Alex Verdugo -- but battled back to strike out Masataka Yoshida before getting Justin Turner to ground out to third to end the ballgame. The right-hander now boasts a 2.63 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and a 34/13 K/BB ratio over 27 1/3 innings on the season.
Willie Calhoun slugged his fifth home run of the season as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox on Saturday.
Calhoun delivered one of the biggest blows of the game -- crushing a 362-foot (98.3 mph EV) go-ahead solo shot off of Tanner Houck in the sixth inning. That was his only hit in three at-bats on the night, but was all that the Yankees would need in this one. With his 1-for-3 effort, Calhoun is now slashing .246/.316/.426 with five long balls and 16 RBI on the season.
