Joey Wentz walked five and surrendered five runs in 4 2/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Phillies.

Jun 05   10:43 PM

Wentz, who had a 3.03 ERA in seven starts as a rookie last year, seemed sort of interesting, at least in an AL-only context, when his velocity spiked this spring. However, his latest ugly outing leaves him 1-6 with a 7.49 ERA this season. He only remains in the Tigers rotation because of the team's injuries, and he still might get bumped in the near future.

Eric Haase finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts versus the Phillies on Monday.

Jun 05   10:43 PM

Haase is coming off two fine seasons and Jake Rogers looked great this spring and at the beginning of the season, so it seemed like catcher would be a relative strength for the Tigers this year. However, Haase is currently sporting a .581 OPS in 166 plate appearances, while Rogers is at .622 in in 113 plate appearances. If Dillon Dingler can step it up in the minors, there should be some room for him in Detroit.

Tyler Alexander is set to start a bullpen game for the Tigers on Tuesday against the Phillies.

Jun 05   10:43 PM

The 28-year-old left-hander will likely work two or three innings in this one, before turning the ball over to someone else in the Tigers' bullpen. Alexander has had a rough season through his first 16 appearances, registering a 6.38 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 23/2 K/BB ratio. He can be avoided for fantasy purposes.

Joey Wiemer doubled twice for the two of the Brewers' three hits in Monday's loss to the Reds.

Jun 05   10:00 PM

Wiemer has hit in six straight games, raising his average from .187 to .214. If he can keep bringing that average up, he has enough power and speed to be of interest in shallow leagues. However, given his poor contact numbers, we wouldn't expect his average to get a whole lot higher.

Julio Teheran yielded two runs in 6 1/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Reds.

Jun 05   10:00 PM

Teheran deserves better than a 1-2 record for having allowed four runs -- three earned -- over 17 1/3 innings in three starts for the Brewers. The team has been shut out in both of his losses.

Alexis Díaz struck out the side in the ninth for his 14th save Monday against the Brewers.

Jun 05   10:00 PM

Díaz gave up three runs in his third appearance of the season this year, but he's allowed just one run in 21 outings since. He's struck out 48.4 percent of the batters he's faced this year, a huge improvement over an already strong 32.5-percent mark as a rookie last year.

Trent Grisham was scratched from the Padres lineup on Monday night due to a sore lower back.

Jun 05   9:06 PM

Brandon Dixon will replace him in the Padres lineup and play right field while Fernando Tatis Jr. slides over to center. Grisham should be considered day-to-day.

Nick Senzel was scratched from the Reds starting lineup on a Monday due to a sore right knee.

Jun 05   7:34 PM

The injury isn’t believed to be serious and shouldn’t require a trip to the injured list. He’s considered day-to-day.

Brayan Bello posted a quality start in Monday afternoon's loss to the Rays, surrendering three runs on six hits over his six frames.

Jun 05   7:18 PM

The right-hander punched out five batters on the day while issuing one free pass. All of the damage done against him came during a three-run uprising in the fifth inning that included a couple of softly hit balls that were perfectly placed. He generated 12 swings and misses on 100 pitches in the contest, posting a CSW of 27 percent. He'll carry a middling 3.97 ERA and 1.43 WHIP into a tough matchup against the Yankees in New York on Saturday.

Justin Turner clubbed his seventh home run of the season on Monday -- accounting for the entirety of the Red Sox' offense in a loss to the Rays.

Jun 05   7:18 PM

Turner victimized Rays' left-hander Shane McClanahan for his 386-foot (101.1 mph EV) solo shot to get the Red Sox on the board in the sixth inning. That would be the extent of their offense. The 38-year-old finished the afternoon 1-for-3 plus a walk and is now hitting .266/.351/.416 with seven homers and 26 RBI on the season.

Jason Adam worked a perfect ninth inning against the Red Sox on Monday, preserving a three-run advantage to earn his ninth save of the season.

Jun 05   7:18 PM

The right-hander made it look awfully easy in this one. Tasked with protecting a three-run lead, he got Masataka Yoshida on a ground out to shortstop and then struck out Enrique Hernandez and Jarren Duran -- each on swinging third strikes -- to end the ballgame. The 31-year-old hurler should continue to operate as the Rays' primary option in the ninth inning with Pete Fairbanks sidelined and should be started in all mixed leagues. He now boasts a 2.84 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 35/10 K/BB ratio over 25 1/3 innings on the season.

Francisco Mejia went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored as the Rays triumphed over the Red Sox in Monday's series finale.

Jun 05   7:18 PM

Mejia smacked a run-scoring single into center field off of Brayan Bello in the fifth inning to extend the Rays' lead to 2-0, then came around to score later in the inning on a fielder's choice off the bat of Josh Lowe. The light-hitting backstop is now hitting .226/.267/.333 with one homer and seven RBI in his part-time action this season.

Yandy Díaz went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored on Monday afternoon, leading the Rays to a 4-1 victory over the Red Sox.

Jun 05   7:18 PM

Díaz continues to be an on-base machine atop the Rays' lineup, causing constant pressure for opposing pitchers. He drew a one-out walk in the seventh inning of this one, then came in to score the Rays' final run in the game when Taylor Walls worked a bases-loaded walk. The 31-year-old is slashing a tremendous .316/.409/.570 to go along with 12 homers and 34 RBI through 51 games on the year.

Jesse Winker (neck) has been cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday.

Jun 05   6:49 PM

Winker has been sidelined since May 28 due to a strained neck. He wasn't going much prior to landing on the injured list either -- hitting .204/.315/.231 with no homers and 13 RBI in 127 plate appearances with the Brewers. It's not yet clear how many at-bats he'll need before he's ready to rejoin the big league club.

Eduardo Rodriguez is scheduled to visit a finger specialist in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Jun 05   6:16 PM

Rodriguez is expected to miss "multiple months" due to a ruptured pulley in his left index finger, but the Tigers want to have an expert take a look at it just to be sure. Prior to landing on the injured list, the 30-year-old southpaw had performed as one of the top pitchers in baseball -- registering a 2.13 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and a 67/16 K/BB ratio over 67 2/3 innings.

Xander Bogaerts (wrist) is hoping to return to the Padres' starting lineup on Tuesday.

Jun 05   6:16 PM

Bogaerts told reporters on Tuesday that surgery is not something that's going to be needed -- even as a long-term fix. It's the same issue that he battled during spring training -- which a cortisone shot took care of -- but he aggravated the injury when he was hit by a Spencer Strider offering on April 18 and it's too soon to get another cortisone shot. It looks like he'll continue to play through the injury -- even though he has hit just .204/.294.303 with three long balls in the 38 games since it occurred.

Matt Mervis is not in the Cubs' starting lineup for Monday night's showdown against the Padres in San Diego.

Jun 05   6:16 PM

As anticipated, Mervis will take a seat with left-hander Blake Snell toeing the slab for the Padres. It'll be Trey Mancini getting the start at first base and batting seventh for the Cubs on Monday's series finale in San Diego.

Jake Fraley was a late scratch from the Reds' starting lineup on Monday due to allergies.

Jun 05   5:36 PM

The 28-year-old had been ready to give it a go, but apparently the pollen count in Cincinnati was ravaging his sinuses during pregame workouts. Stuart Fairchild will replace him in the Reds' lineup on Monday while Kevin Newman will slide up to bat leadoff for the Reds against Julio Teheran and the Brewers on Monday evening.

TJ Friedl (hamstring) took batting practice on the field prior to Monday's contest against the Brewers.

Jun 05   5:36 PM

While he's not running yet, the fact that Friedl is still out there taking batting practice seems to bode well for his recovery from a low-grade left hamstring strain. The Reds remain hopeful that he won't require longer than a minimum stint on the injured list.

Jose Altuve (oblique) is expected to return to the Astros' starting lineup on Wednesday.

Jun 05   5:36 PM

Astros' skipper Dusty Baker told reporters that Altuve was "doing a lot better" on Monday, but that he wasn't sure if he would be ready in time to play on Tuesday. It sounds like the 33-year-old will be able to avoid another trip to the injured list, which should be news to the ears of fantasy managers.
