Luken Baker is at designated hitter and batting fifth on Monday against the Rangers.
Baker tallied two hits on Sunday against the Pirates in his big league debut and will get another opportunity in the heart of the Cardinals' lineup on Monday evening against southpaw Martín Pérez. The 26-year-old put up some impressive minor league numbers prior to his call up over the weekend and might turn out to be worthy of a speculative roster spot in deeper mixed leagues.
Nolan Gorman is not in the Cardinals' lineup for Monday's series opener against the Rangers.
It'll be Brendan Donovan at second base on Monday evening to face left-hander Martín Pérez. Gorman figures to come off the bench at some point during the contest.
Jorge Soler is not in the Marlins' lineup for Monday's series opener against the Royals.
It's a bit perplexing that Soler is sitting out for the second consecutive game, but there's been zero indication that he's dealing with any sort of physical issue recently. The 31-year-old slugger has clobbered 17 round-trippers in 58 games to open the 2023 campaign. Fantasy managers should keep a close eye on his status moving forward, just in case some new information surfaces.
Braves transferred LHP Max Fried from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
Fried resumed a throwing program a couple weeks ago as he continues to work his way back from a left forearm strain. The 29-year-old fantasy ace isn't expected to return to Atlanta's starting rotation until sometime in mid-July, most likely following the All-Star break.
Braves claimed INF Luke Williams off waivers from the Dodgers.
Williams will head to Triple-A Gwinnett to serve as extra organizational depth for Atlanta. The versatile 26-year-old got into four contests earlier this season for Los Angeles.
Jose Siri (shoulder) remains absent from the Rays' lineup for Monday's series finale against the Red Sox.
Siri will sit out his second consecutive contest on Monday evening at Fenway Park as he continues to deal with some lingering shoulder soreness stemming from a diving catch in center field to end the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. It doesn't sound like he'll wind up requiring a trip to the injured list at this juncture. It'll be Manuel Margot in center field on Monday night in his absence.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that Enrique Hernández will start in center field against left-handers.
Simply put, Hernández is finished playing shortstop. He's committed a staggering 13 throwing errors this season, including a couple at shortstop over the weekend, and has graded out as one of the worst defenders in baseball at the position from an advanced metrics standpoint. It sounds like Pablo Reyes and Yu Chang (hand), once he returns from the injured list, will get the bulk of the starts at the position until Trevor Story (elbow) is ready to return.
Kutter Crawford will make a spot start on Wednesday against the Guardians.
The Red Sox are going to piece it together this week from a rotation standpoint following Saturday's doubleheader against the Rays and a six-game road trip starting on Tuesday against Cleveland. Crawford will likely work a couple innings before handing the ball to the remainder of Boston's bullpen. Garrett Whitlock is having his next start pushed back an extra day to Friday against the Yankees.
Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports the Mets are expected to designate Tomás Nido for assignment.
There's unlikely to be anything official from the Mets until Tuesday's series opener against the Braves, but they're expected to roll with top prospect Francisco Álvarez and Omar Narváez, who is returning from the injured list ahead of Tuesday's game in Atlanta, as their catching tandem moving forward.
Mets designated C Tomás Nido for assignment.
The move is now official. Nido remains an excellent defensive catcher, but there isn't any room for him in New York with top prospect Francisco Álvarez starting to emerge as one of the better backstops in baseball and veteran Omar Nárvaez returning from the injured list. The 29-year-old has batted just .125 (7-for-56) with one RBI across 22 games this season.
Pirates C prospect Henry Davis has been promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis.
The top-overall selection in the 2021 MLB Draft is officially on the doorstep to the majors after slashing .284/.433/.547 with 10 homers and seven stolen bases across 187 plate appearances in 41 games this season for Double-A Altoona. The 23-year-old backstop has a realistic shot at making his big league debut sometime this summer.
Twins SS prospect Austin Martin (elbow) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Monday in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.
Martin has been on the shelf since spring training when he suffered a UCL sprain in his right elbow. The 24-year-old infielder, who is one of the better prospects in the Twins' system, put together a strong performance last year in the Arizona Fall League and might have a shot at reaching Minnesota later this season.
Reds designated RHP Frank German for assignment.
German was claimed off waivers last month from the White Sox and hasn't appeared in the majors this season. The 25-year-old righty made five relief appearances last year for the Red Sox and might have a shot at passing through waivers unclaimed.
Reds optioned RHP Kevin Herget to Triple-A Louisville.
Herget has been sent back to the minors to make room on Cincinnati's active roster for pitching prospect Andrew Abbott to make his big league debut on Monday evening against the Brewers. The 32-year-old righty has registered a respectable 4.79 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 11/6 K/BB ratio across 20 2/3 innings (12 appearances) this season in the majors. He should return to Cincinnati's bullpen in a few weeks.
Joey Bart (groin) went 1-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts on Sunday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Sacramento.
Bart started at catcher and has played three consecutive games since starting a minor league rehab assignment last Friday. The 26-year-old figures to rejoin San Francisco's lineup this week when they open a series on Tuesday against the Rockies at Coors Field.
Penn Murfee (elbow) tossed a perfect inning on Sunday in a minor league rehab appearance for Triple-A Tacoma.
Murfee needed just 15 pitches (nine strikes) to strike out a pair of batters in a flawless frame. The 29-year-old righty will likely need a couple additional outings this week before rejoining Seattle's relief mix.
Dodgers signed RHP Ryan Brasier to a minor league contract.
Brasier was released by the Red Sox last month after struggling to a bloated 7.29 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 18/9 K/BB ratio across 21 innings (20 appearances) this season. The 35-year-old righty has been a durable innings-eater and might get a shot in Los Angeles very soon given their unexpected struggles this year to find quality low-leverage relief depth.
Trevor Larnach (illness) went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Sunday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A St. Paul.
There were some rumblings that Larnach could get the call back to the majors with the Twins dealing with multiple injuries to their offensive core group, but he's remaining at Triple-A St. Paul for the moment. He's been out since late May due to pneumonia, but is fully healthy. There's a chance he simply remains in the minors once his rehab assignment concludes.
Mitch White (elbow) tossed a scoreless inning Sunday in a minor league rehab appearance for Triple-A Buffalo.
White has been hit hard in the upper minors since resuming his rehab assignment last week and will continue working in a relief role at Triple-A Buffalo. He's yet to pitch in the majors this season due to injury and doesn't appear close yet.
Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) went 0-for-4 with a strikeout on Sunday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Toledo.
Carpenter is still working his way back from a right shoulder sprain that sent him to the injured list in late April and might still need some additional rehab contests to get back up to speed. He's batting .148 (4-for-27) with zero homers in seven games on his rehab assignment so far.
