Andrew Abbott has joined the Reds in Cincinnati.
Abbott will be on the taxi squad for now but could join the rotation sometime soon. The 24-year-old has a 2.50 ERA across ten starts between Double-A and Triple-A. In his last start at Triple-A, Abbott struck out eight with 16 swinging strikes. He should be picked up in most fantasy leagues.
Cardinals selected the contract of 1B Luken Baker from Triple-A Memphis.
Baker has massive raw power and hit .313/.434/.641 with 18 homers across 244 plate appearances at Triple-A Memphis this season. He is limited defensively but should be a power boost for the fifth-place Cardinals.
Pirates selected the contract of RHP Chase De Jong from Triple-A Indianapolis.
De Jong went unclaimed on waivers in early May but returns to the active roster on Sunday. The 29-year-old posted a 2.84 ERA across five appearances since then and will come out of the Pirates bullpen in lower leverage situations.
Pirates optioned RHP Yerry De Los Santos to Triple-A Indianapolis.
The 25-year-old struck out one and walked another in his season debut with the Pirates on Saturday. He will head back to Triple-A and serve as organization depth.
Brendan Donovan is not in the Cardinals' starting lineup for Sunday's showdown against the Pirates.
Donovan has played in the last ten games for the Cardinals while bouncing around the diamond. Tommy Edman will bat leadoff and play center field, while Juan Yepez will get a shot in right field in Donovan's absence.
Joely Rodríguez felt something in his left biceps while warming up prior to the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rays.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters that Rodríguez felt something around his biceps area while warming up for the second game of Saturday's day-night doubleheader. Rodríguez missed six weeks at the beginning of the season with a lat injury, and there is a chance he will land on the injured list again.
Dany Jiménez (shoulder) has started a throwing program and is up to 60 feet.
Jiménez has been on the shelf with a right shoulder strain since April 17 and is not eligible to return until June 18. There is no timetable for his return, but the team expects him to pitch again this season.
Kirby Snead (shoulder) threw a live bullpen session on Friday.
Snead's love bullpen session comes on the heels of him throwing a sim game in late May. A's manager Mark Kotsay told reporters that the next step is for the 28-year-old to begin a minor league rehab assignment. Snead has been on the shelf since March with a left shoulder strain.
Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports that the Diamondbacks have extended manager Torey Lovullo through the 2024 season.
Lovullo has guided the Diamondbacks to a 35-24 record and is tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the National League. Arizona hasn't made the postseason since the 2017 campaign, which was during Lovullo's first season as manager. There should be an official announcement in the coming days.
David Bednar notched another save with a scoreless ninth against the Cardinals on Saturday.
Bednar got the call to protect a precious one-run lead in the ninth and allowed one hit to collect his 12th save of the year. The 28-year-old righty is a perfect 12-for-12 in save chances this year and has a pristine 1.17 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, and 29/1 K/BB ratio over 23 innings.
Joey Votto (shoulder) went 0-for-4 on Saturday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Louisville.
Joey Votto restarted his minor league rehab assignment on Saturday and went hitless while serving as designated hitter for Triple-A Louisville. The 39-year-old, who is coming back from offseason shoulder surgery, hit .184 (7-for-38) through his first ten rehab games before shutting things down in April. He remains without a timetable to return to the Reds lineup.
Adam Duvall (wrist) went 1-for-5 with a double in a rehab game with Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
Duvall has gone 2-for-14 (.143) with five strikeouts and one walk over four rehab games at Triple-A while starting in center field in three of them. Duvall is not eligible to return from the 60-day IL until June 9, but his return puts the Red Sox in an interesting situation with Jarren Duran's recent cold streak. Before the injury, the 34-year-old veteran was white-hot --hitting .455/.514/.1.030 with four homers and 14 RBI through 37 plate appearances.
Spencer Strider pitched two-run ball for six innings Saturday as the Braves topped the Diamondbacks 5-2.
This makes three straight outings in which Strider has allowed exactly two earned runs in six innings. Seven strikeouts seems to be the floor for the 24-year-old, as he finished with that total for the second time this year. He's averaged 9.4 strikeouts per start while going 6-2 with a 2.97 ERA.
Ryne Nelson surrendered three runs in 4 2/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Braves.
Nelson struck out none and walked four tonight, giving him a 1/7 K/BB ratio in his last two starts. Just like five days ago, Drey Jameson again outpitched Nelson after relieving him. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the Diamondbacks go back to Jameson in the rotation and send Nelson down for a spell.
Raisel Iglesias pitched a scoreless ninth Saturday against the Diamondbacks for his sixth save.
Iglesias has shaken off that odd three-walk outing on Tuesday to pick up easy saves his last two times out. He allowed only a single before finishing off Arizona tonight.
Ronald Acuña Jr. collected his 12th homer, his 17th double and his 24th steal versus the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Acuña is tied for second in MLB with 30 extra-base hits and alone in second with his 50 runs scored and 24 steals.
Wilmer Flores finished 3-for-4 with two RBI as the Giants' designated hitter on Saturday.
Flores was on the bench in seven straight games towards the end of last month, but he's started three of the last five. Michael Conforto's absence is probably mostly responsible for the last two of those starts. Flores hasn't been too bad in hitting .248/.299/.436, but he's taken a backseat because of the play of J.D. Davis and Casey Schmitt in the infield. It also hurts that the Giants have clearly soured on him at second base; it was his most common position last year, but he hasn't started one game there in 2023.
Kyle Bradish yielded three runs in four innings Saturday in a loss to the Giants.
Unfortunately, five of the even hits Bradish gave up came consecutively in the third inning. That produced all three runs. Bradish wound up with five strikeouts and one walk. The Orioles announced after the game that they're skipping the fifth spot next time around the rotation, which is bad news for those rostering Bradish. It means he'll pitch in Milwaukee on Thursday rather than at home against the Royals the following day.
Alex Cobb lasted 7 2/3 innings and struck out seven as the Giants blanked the Orioles 4-0 on Saturday.
Cobb wasn't as efficient tonight as he was against the Cardinals back in April, so he didn't get the chance to go for his second shutout of the year. It's still the fourth time he's pitched at least seven scoreless innings. He's 5-2 with a 2.71 ERA.
Dodgers' skipper Dave Roberts told reporters on Saturday night that Trayce Thompson is likely heading to the injured list after suffering a strained oblique during Saturday's loss to the Yankees.
Thompson reportedly suffered the injury on a check swing during Saturday's game. He'll need to undergo further testing to determine the severity of the strain, but Thompson will be shelved for a couple of weeks at a minimum.
