Luke Raley went 2-for-4 with a solo homer on Thursday, powering the Rays to a 4-3 victory over the Athletics.
Raley put Tampa Bay ahead for good with a tie-breaking shot to center field off righty Austin Pruitt in the eighth inning. It was his 12th round-tripper of the season and second time he's gone deep in his last seven contests.
Ryne Nelson was torched for five runs over four innings on Thursday in a loss to the Phillies.
Yikes. Nelson coughed up a whopping 10 hits, including a solo homer to Bryson Stott, and needed 82 pitches (54 strikes) to complete four frames. He notched five strikeouts and also issued a pair of walks. He'll bring a bloated 5.30 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 46/26 K/BB ratio across 71 1/3 innings (14 starts) into a road matchup on Tuesday against the Brewers.
Craig Kimbrel fired a perfect ninth inning on Thursday against the Diamondbacks to record his 10th save of the season.
Kimbrel got the call to protect a one-run margin in the final frame and needed an efficient 13 pitches (11 strikes) to quiet the Diamondbacks. The 35-year-old veteran stopper figures to continue to vulture the occasional save chance from lefty José Alvarado moving forward.
Ketel Marte clobbered a three-run homer on Thursday in his return to the Diamondbacks' lineup.
Marte gave Arizona a brief one-run advantage in the third inning when he took right-hander Aaron Nola deep for his 10th round-tripper of the season. The 29-year-old second baseman was back in the lineup on Thursday afternoon following a two-game absence due to back tightness.
Bryson Stott went 2-for-5 with a solo homer on Thursday, lifting the Phillies to a 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
Stott kicked off the scoring with a second-inning blast to right field -- his seventh long ball of the season -- off starter Ryne Nelson. He also singled and came around to score on Alec Bohm's RBI double in the ensuing frame. Strangely enough, neither team scored over the final five frames after totaling nine runs through the opening four innings.
Richard Lovelady will undergo an MRI on his left elbow.
Lovelady told reporters following his exit from Thursday's relief appearance against the Rays that he felt a "burning sensation" in his left elbow, which certainly doesn't sound great. He's almost certain to wind up landing on the injured list later this week.
Seth Lugo (calf) threw a three-inning simulated game on Thursday.
Lugo will likely progress to a minor league rehab assignment next week and should be ready to return to San Diego's pitching mix by the end of June. It's also possible he'll skip a rehab assignment entirely and jump back into the Padres' rotation as early as next week. The 33-year-old righty has been on the shelf since mid-May when he suffered a right calf strain.
Brandon Drury will serve his league-issued one-game suspension during Thursday's game against the Rangers.
Drury appears to have been unsuccessful in appealing a one-game suspension that he was handed earlier this week for arguing balls and strikes and also making contact with an umpire. He'll return to the Angels' lineup later this week.
Gio Urshela (back) has returned to the Angels' lineup for Thursday's showdown against the Rangers.
Urshela is at first base in place of a suspended Brandon Drury for Thursday's series finale against the Rangers following a four-game absence due to an ongoing back issue.
Max Muncy (hamstring) went through on-field agility drills on Thursday.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts apparently misspoke on Wednesday evening when he told reporters that Muncy, who remains absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the White Sox, had been diagnosed with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. The 32-year-old slugger clarified on Thursday that he's merely dealing with a mild left hamstring strain and is aiming to return to Los Angeles' lineup this weekend.
J.D. Martinez is absent from the Dodgers' lineup for Thursday's game against the White Sox.
It appears to be a scheduled off day for Martinez. It'll be Jason Heyward getting the nod at designated hitter on Thursday evening in his place.
Max Fried (shoulder) has yet to progress to throwing off a mound.
Fried started a throwing program a couple weeks ago and is likely to return to the Braves' starting rotation after the All-Star break. It sounds like he's getting close to facing hitters sometime in the next few weeks before kicking off a minor league rehab assignment. The 29-year-old southpaw has been on the shelf since early May due to a left forearm strain.
Angels optioned RHP Jimmy Herget to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Herget has been jettisoned to the minors to enable Los Angeles to bring up a fresh arm ahead of Thursday's showdown against the Rangers. The 29-year-old righty holds a lackluster 5.17 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 10/5 K/BB ratio across 15 2/3 innings (15 appearances) this season.
Angels recalled LHP Kolton Ingram from Double-A Rocket City.
Ingram was added to the Angels' 40-man roster last November and will get his first taste of the majors after compiling a solid 2.63 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 38/19 K/BB ratio across 27 1/3 innings (23 appearances) this season for Double-A Rocket City. The 26-year-old lefty will be available out of the Angels' bullpen on Thursday evening against the Rangers.
Angels recalled SS Andrew Velazquez from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Velazquez is a solid defensive shortstop and figures to pick up the majority of the starts at the position while rookie Zach Neto (oblique) is sidelined for the next few weeks. The 28-year-old middle infielder has yet to appear in the majors this season after getting into a career-high 125 contests last year for Los Angeles.
Richard Lovelady was removed from a relief appearance on Thursday against the Rays with an apparent left arm injury.
Lovelady appeared to be grabbing his left forearm after delivering a pitch during Thursday's game against the Rays and was immediately lifted from the contest. There should be an update on his status soon, but it didn't look good.
Rockies designated RHP Blair Calvo for assignment.
Calvo has been removed from Colorado's 40-man roster to make room for backup catcher Jorge Alfaro. The 27-year-old righty made one relief appearance earlier this season for the Rockies.
Rockies optioned C Brian Serven to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Serven has been sent back to the minors with newly-signed catcher Jorge Alfaro getting the call back to the big leagues.
Max Fried (shoulder) has progressed to throwing off a mound.
Joey Meneses is not in the Nationals' lineup for Thursday's game against the Astros.
It appears to be a routine off day for Meneses, who has started 22 consecutive contests since May 19.
