Mark Canha is at first base and batting ninth for Tuesday's Subway Series opener against the Yankees.
Canha gets the nod at the cold corner with rookie Mark Vientos on the bench to open Tuesday's highly-anticipated showdown against the Yankees. The expectation was that Vientos would get the majority of the starts at first base in the wake of Pete Alonso's wrist injury, but Canha has started three of five games since the All-Star slugger went on the injured list.
Tigers optioned RHP Garrett Hill to Triple-A Toledo.
Hill was charged with three runs (two earned) over 2 2/3 innings during Monday's series opener against the Braves and has been sent back to the minors for Detroit to bring up a fresh arm. The 27-year-old righty has struggled to a bloated 8.49 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 11/10 K/BB ratio across 11 2/3 innings (seven appearances) this season in the majors.
Tigers recalled RHP Brendan White from Triple-A Toledo.
White gives the Tigers a fresh bullpen arm for Tuesday's contest against the Braves. The 24-year-old righty was up briefly earlier this season, but didn't get into a game. He's posted a serviceable 4.78 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and 43/10 K/BB ratio across 32 innings (25 appearances) this season for Triple-A Toledo.
Camilo Doval recorded a four-out save on Monday against the Cardinals.
Doval came on to record the final out of the eight inning and managed to hang onto a narrow one-run advantage in the ninth inning for his 17th save of the season. The hard-throwing 25-year-old closer has converted 17 of his 18 save chances this season to go along with a stellar 1.86 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 41/12 K/BB ratio across 29 innings (29 appearances).
Diamondbacks released INF Yairo Muñoz.
Muñoz got into 29 games last season for the Phillies and signed a minor league contract back in January with the Diamondbacks. The 28-year-old infielder was batting .304 (14-for-46) with zero homers and five RBI through 12 games this season at Triple-A Reno. He doesn't have anything left to prove in the upper minors, but has never quite been able to carve out a reserve role at the highest level.
Giants released LHP Daniel Tillo.
Tillo has been cut loose after posting a calamitous 10.30 ERA, 2.05 WHIP and 17/24 K/BB ratio across 25 1/3 innings (17 appearances, four starts) this season for Triple-A Sacramento. The 27-year-old southpaw signed a minor league contract last April with San Francisco as a reclamation project, shortly after being released by the Royals, and has yet to reach the majors.
Zach Jackson (forearm) is scheduled to resume throwing next week.
Jackson has been on the shelf since mid-May due to a right flexor tendon strain and will likely need a couple weeks to build up his arm strength before returning to Oakland's closing mix.
Kirby Snead (shoulder) will make a minor league rehab appearance on Wednesday for Triple-A Las Vegas.
Snead remains without an exact timetable to return to Oakland's relief mix, but should be ready at some point in the next few weeks. He's been out since spring training due to a left shoulder strain.
Freddy Tarnok (shoulder) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday with Triple-A Las Vegas.
Tarnok threw a bullpen session on Monday and will progress to a rehab assignment later this week. The 24-year-old righty should be ready to return to Oakland's pitching mix sometime in late June or early July.
Alex Cobb (hip) is scheduled to start on Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Cobb was lifted for precautionary reasons from his previous start last Thursday against the Rockies after 83 pitches due to some mild left hip tightness. The veteran right-hander told reporters afterwards that he didn't expect it to be an issue moving forward and he's ready to take the ball on Tuesday evening in St. Louis.
Matt Vierling went 2-for-4 with a double and also walked on Monday in his return to the Tigers' lineup.
Vierling reached base safely in three of his five plate appearances during Monday's 10-inning marathon. The 26-year-old outfielder was back in Detroit's lineup following a minimum stay on the injured list due to lower back soreness. He figures to continue playing regularly against left-handed pitching.
Carson Kelly went 0-for-3 with a walk on Monday in his return to the Diamondbacks' lineup.
Kelly made his season debut after missing nearly two and a half months to open the 2023 campaign after suffering a fractured right forearm during spring training.
Brewers activated RHP J.B. Bukauskas from the 15-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A Nashville.
Bukauskas has wrapped up a minor league rehab assignment after landing on the shelf back in mid-May with a neck strain, and will remain stationed at Triple-A Nashville as extra organizational relief depth.
Elias Díaz went 1-for-4 with an RBI single on Monday in his return to the Rockies' lineup.
The positive news for fantasy managers is that Díaz was back handling the catching duties on Monday evening at Fenway Park following a one-game absence after taking a foul tip off the mask during Saturday's contest against the Padres. He delivered a game-tying RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning off right-hander Josh Winckowski and also walked in the ensuing frame.
Ricky Karcher got a save for throwing a scoreless 10th inning against the Royals in his major league debut Monday.
Congratulations to Karcher, who was recalled Friday in spite of a 9.27 ERA and a 31/34 K/BB ratio in 22 1/3 innings for Triple-A Louisville. He walked a batter tonight, but he retired the other three he faced to protect a one-run lead in the 10th.
Zack Greinke yielded three runs in five-plus innings Monday against the Reds.
It was one run through five innings, but Greinke gave up back-to-back doubles to open the sixth inning and the inherited runner came around to score off Jose Cuas. Maybe next time the Royals will simply pull him after five. The league has hit .317 and slugged .683 off him the third time through the order this season.
Jonathan India went 2-for-5 with two RBI as the Reds edged the Royals 5-4 in 10 innings Monday.
India had the game-winning RBI on a grounder to third in which TJ Friedl altered his path to try to interfere with the throw home and Salvador Perez arguably tried to block the plate without the ball. Friedl was called out on the field but then ruled safe on the replay, which was probably for the best. It gave the Reds a 5-4 lead, and they made it stand up in the bottom of the 10th.
Tommy Henry wasn't at his best in Monday's no-decision against the Phillies, giving up five runs on nine hits in his 4 2/3 innings of work.
On the plus side for fantasy managers, the 25-year-old southpaw managed to rack up six strikeouts on the night while issuing just one free pass. J.T. Realmuto was responsible for most of the damage against him -- with a solo homer in the second and a two-run triple in the third inning. Henry generated a whopping 17 swinging strikes on 85 pitches in the contest, posting a CSW of 29 percent. He'll carry an uninspiring 4.86 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and a 33/20 K/BB ratio (50 innings) into Saturday's matchup against the Guardians.
Miguel Castro made things interesting in the ninth inning against the Phillies on Monday night, but managed to escape with his seventh save of the season.
The right-hander took over with the Diamondbacks leading 9-7 heading to the ninth inning. He allowed a leadoff double to J.T. Realmuto to bring the tying run to the plate, but battled back to retire Alec Bohm on a ground ball and Josh Harrison on a pop out to second base. Bryson Stott then delivered an RBI single though, cutting the lead to one. Kody Clemens then crushed what looked like a go-ahead two-run homer, but upon review it was ruled a foul ball. Castro then struck out Clemens swinging to end the ballgame. The right-hander now boasts a 3.95 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 24/10 K/BB ratio across his first 27 1/3 innings on the season.
Evan Longoria homered and drove in four runs on Monday night, powering the Diamondbacks to a 9-8 victory over the visiting Phillies.
Longoria opened the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly that plated Ketel Marte. He then clobbered a 434-foot (107.0 mph EV) three-run homer off of Andrew Vasquez in the sixth inning that extended the Diamondbacks' advantage to 9-5. The 37-year-old has struggled for the most part at the plate this season, but has provided occasional punch -- slashing just .226/.276/.538 with nine homers and 19 RBI.
