Josh Hader fired a perfect ninth inning on Saturday against the Rockies to record his 15th save of the season.
Hader was summoned to guard a one-run advantage in the final frame and needed just 13 pitches (10 strikes) to silence the Rockies. He struck out Ryan McMahon, got Austin Wynns to ground out and fanned Elehuris Montero to seal San Diego's victory. The dynamic 29-year-old closer has converted 15 of his 18 save opportunities this season to go along with a microscopic 1.42 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 34/12 K/BB ratio across 25 1/3 innings (26 appearances).
Gary Sánchez scalded an RBI single on Saturday in the Padres' win over the Rockies.
Sánchez kicked off the scoring with an RBI single in the opening frame and has shown zero signs of slowing down at the plate since arriving in San Diego a couple weeks ago.
Red Sox' skipper Alex Cora told reporters on Saturday that John Schreiber (shoulder) is now throwing from a distance of 75 feet.
He continues his throwing progression and sounds like he's getting closer to throwing off of a mound for the first time. Schreiber has been on the shelf since May 15 due to a right shoulder teres major strain. There's still no clear timeline for a potential return to the Red Sox' bullpen.
Seiya Suzuki is absent from the Cubs' starting lineup for Friday night's matchup against the Giants.
It looks to be nothing more than a routine day of rest for the hard-hitting 28-year-old outfielder. Suzuki is slashing .278/.367/.450 with six homers, 19 RBI and one stolen base (in five attempts) through his first 50 games on the season. Christopher Morel will start in his place in right field and bat third for the Phillies against the Giants on Saturday evening in San Francisco.
Trey Wingenter (shoulder) began a minor league rehab assignment with Single-A Lakeland on Saturday.
The right-hander has been shelved since April 19 due to tendinitis in his right shoulder. He's eligible to return from the injured list on June 18, though it's unclear if he'll be ready to return as soon as he's eligible. Before landing on the injured list, Wingenter had posted an 8.31 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and a 5/2 K/BB ratio over 4 1/3 innings out of the Tigers' bullpen.
Reds signed RHP Michael Mariot to a minor league contract.
The 34-year-old hurler hasn't pitched in the big leagues since the 2016 season, but continues to hold onto the dream. He had been pitching for the Cleburne Railroaders in the independent American Association where he registered a 5.06 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and a 29/5 K/BB ratio over 26 2/3 innings. He'll add pitching depth at the Triple-A level for the Reds.
Joe Ryan allowed three runs over six innings on Saturday in a no-decision against the Blue Jays.
Ryan surrendered run-scoring singles to Whit Merrifield and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., in addition to a sacrifice fly from Nathan Lukes, to fall behind early. Fortunately, Minnesota's offense bailed him out with nine runs over the final three frames to take him off the hook for a loss. He notched four strikeouts and only issued one walk in this one. He'll carry a strong 2.90 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 84/15 K/BB ratio across 77 2/3 innings (13 starts) into a favorable home matchup on Friday against the Tigers.
TJ Friedl went 0-for-5 with a strikeout on Saturday in his return to the Reds' lineup.
It might take Friedl a few games to knock off some of the rust after skipping a minor league rehab assignment. He's played just six games total since May 11 due to hamstring issues.
J.D. Davis (hip) returned to the Giants' starting lineup on Saturday.
Davis was a late scratch from Friday's lineup due to tightness in his right hip -- though he did appear as a pinch-hitter in that contest. For the season, the 30-year-old slugger is hitting .289/.371/.487 with nine homers and 34 RBI in 230 plate appearances.
Casey Schmitt is absent from the Giants' starting lineup on Saturday.
Schmitt was held out of Friday's lineup initially -- but got added late after J.D. Davis (hip) was scratched. Unfortunately, he went hitless again in that contest and is now situated on the pine once again on Saturday. If he continues to struggle, the 24-year-old may wind up back at Triple-A Sacramento for more seasoning.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters on Saturday that Adalberto Mondesi (knee) is still not making progress in his recovery from left knee surgery.
The Red Sox just keep kicking the can down the road as to when Mondesi may be ready to return, as he's simply not making any progress in his return from a torn ACL in his knee. At this point, fantasy managers in redraft leagues without injured reserve spots may want to take the loss and cut bait.
Luke Maile went 2-for-4 with a three-run double on Saturday, leading the Reds to an 8-4 win over the Cardinals.
Sometimes, it's the unheralded backup catcher's time to shine. Maile stole the spotlight from Cincinnati's overabundance of young talent with a second-inning bases-clearing double off righty Miles Mikolas to give the Reds an early advantage that they never relinquished.
Michael Kopech tossed five shutout innings on Saturday in a no-decision against the Marlins.
Kopech hit the first two batters he faced to open the contest, but wriggled out of the early jam and wound up allowing just six baserunners over five sharp frames. He notched six strikeouts and only handed out one free pass. He'll bring a respectable 4.03 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 85/33 K/BB ratio across 73 2/3 innings (13 starts) into a road tilt on Friday against the Mariners.
Sandy Alcantara yielded one run over seven innings on Saturday in a no-decision against the White Sox.
Alcantara coughed up a fourth-inning homer to Andrew Vaughn, which represented the lone tally against him over seven strong frames. He finished with only four strikeouts, issued a pair of walks and also hit one batter. The 27-year-old reigning National League Cy Young Award winner will carry an underwhelming 4.75 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 71/27 K/BB ratio across 83 1/3 innings (13 starts) into a tasty road matchup on Friday against the Nationals.
Joe Kelly was charged with five runs (two earned) in the ninth inning on Saturday in an ugly blown save against the Marlins.
Kelly got the call to guard a one-run lead in the final frame with Kendall Graveman unavailable after pitching in three of Chicago's the last four games and wasn't able to get the job done. A pivotal fielding error by Tim Anderson helped open the floodgates, but Kelly wasn't sharp, allowing two hits and a pair of walks before being pulled.
Garrett Cooper (arm) delivered a pinch-hit single on Saturday in the Marlins' win over the White Sox.
Cooper came off the bench to contribute a key leadoff single in the ninth inning that jumpstarted Miami's eventual five-run explosion in a comeback win. The 32-year-old first baseman was held out of the Marlins' lineup after suffering a left arm injury during Friday's series opener, but is expected to be ready to return shortly.
Andrew Vaughn belted a solo homer on Saturday in the White Sox' loss to the Marlins.
Vaughn's fourth-inning dinger of Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara supplied Chicago's lone run of the contest. It was his eighth round-tripper of the season and first time he's left the yard since May 29.
Andres Gimenez is absent from the Guardians lineup for Saturday’s battle against the Astros.
It appears to be just a routine day of rest for the slumping second baseman. Tyler Freeman will start in his place at second base and bat seventh against J.P. France and the Astros on Saturday night.
Matthew Boyd was shelled for five runs over five innings on Saturday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.
All of the damage against Boyd came courtesy of the long ball in this one as he served up a two-run shot to Nick Ahmed in the second inning and a three-run moonshot to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. a couple frames later. He notched only three strikeouts and issued two walks. He'll carry an inflated 5.55 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 56/24 K/BB ratio across 58 1/3 innings (12 starts) into a road matchup on Thursday against the Twins.
Ryne Nelson tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings on Saturday in a win over the Tigers.
Nelson was staked to an early lead and wound up cruising through five frames before putting a couple runners on-base in the sixth inning, which led to his exit. Fortunately, reliever Austin Adams came on to put out the fire. He finished with four strikeouts and also issued two walks. He'll bring a serviceable 4.95 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 41/24 K/BB ratio across 67 1/3 innings (13 starts) into a home matchup on Thursday against the Phillies.
