Eddie Rosario went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and a run scored as the Braves eked out a one-run victory over the Nationals on Friday night in Atlanta.
Rosario singled off of Kyle Finnegan in the eighth inning, then wound up coming around to score the go-ahead run on an infield single off the bat of Orlando Arcia. With his two-hit attack, the 31-year-old outfielder is now slashing a respectable .258/.282/.459 with eight homers and 26 RBI on the season.
Orlando Arcia drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on Friday night as the Braves topped the Nationals 3-2.
Arcia hustled out a two-out RBI single off of Kyle Finnegan in the eighth inning, giving the Braves a 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish. The 28-year-old has been outstanding for the Braves this season -- slashing .324/.379/.480 with five homers and 18 RBI in his first 42 ballgames.
Josiah Gray was terrific in a tough-luck no-decision against the Braves on Friday night, piling up six strikeouts over five innings of one-run baseball.
The right-hander scattered just two hits on the night while issuing four free passes. The lone tally against him came on an RBI groundout off the bat of Orlando Arcia in the second inning. Gray exited with a 2-1 lead and in line to earn his fifth victory of the season, but the Nationals' bullpen was unable to hang on for him. He generated a whopping 18 swings and misses on 96 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 28 percent. He'll carry a 3.00 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 61/37 K/BB ratio (72 innings) into a tough matchup against the Astros in Houston on Thursday.
Fernando Tatis Jr. went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and a walk on Friday against the Rockies.
Tatis Jr. drew a walk in the second inning and scored on a two-run blast by Gary Sanchez. After knocking a double in the fourth, he added a home run of his own with a solo shot to lead off the sixth. The 24-year-old star is batting .262/.313/.514 with 12 homers, 30 RBI, and seven steals across 198 plate appearances.
Luis Castillo allowed five runs -- three earned -- and struck out ten batters over six innings on Friday in a loss against the Angels.
After a runner reached on an error with two outs in the third inning, Shohei Ohtani took Castillo deep for a game-tying two-run homer. A run would score in the fourth on a double and base hit. Then Mickey Moniak homered to bring in two more in the sixth. Castillo generated a whopping 26 whiffs to strike out ten batters. The 30-year-old right-hander will take an excellent 2.70 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 92 strikeouts across 76 2/3 innings into a matchup against the Marlins in Seattle on Wednesday.
Ben Joyce was removed from Friday's outing against the Mariners due to right hand irritation.
That's a new one. Not sure what exactly constitutes an irritated hand, but that's what caused Joyce to be removed from Friday's outing in the middle of an at-bat and after throwing only eight pitches. Fortunately. it doesn't sound like it's something that should sideline him for long. Be sure to check back on the flame-throwing right-hander's status prior to Saturday's game.
Shohei Ohtani allowed three runs over five innings on Friday in a no-decision against the Mariners.
Ohtani struggled with his command in this one, walking five batters in the inefficient outing. After walking the leadoff man to start the game, Jarred Kelenic made him pay with a two-run shot. The Mariners added one more run in the fifth on a walk, hit batter, and a base hit. Ohtani struck out six on the day and helped his cause with a two-run blast of his own at the plate. The 28-year-old star with take a 3.32 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 102 strikeouts across 76 innings into a start against the Rangers in Texas next week.
Jarred Kelenic went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer on Friday against the Angels.
With a runner on base in the first inning, Kelenic took Shohei Ohtani deep for a two-run shot to give the Mariners the early lead. The 23-year-old outfielder has cooled off a bit after his scorching start, but he's still enjoying a stellar breakout season, batting .270/.333/.502 with 11 homers and seven steals across 237 plate appearances.
Ben Lively surrendered seven runs over 6 2/3 innings on Friday in a loss against the Cardinals.
Lively served up a two-run homer to Nolan Arenado in the first inning. He was hurt by the long ball once again in the second when Jordan Walker took him deep for two more runs. Lively settled in after that to give the Reds some length on the mound, allowing one more run across four innings before giving up another two-run shot in the seventh. He managed to collect eight strikeouts while walking one batter. The 31-year-old right-hander will take a 4.21 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 37 strikeouts across 36 1/3 innings into a matchup against the Royals in Kansas City on Wednesday.
Giovanny Gallegos struck out one batter over 1 1/3 innings on Friday to earn the save against the Reds.
Gallegos entered the game in the top of the eighth with two runners on and two outs to get the Cardinals out of the jam. He secured the final out before striking out one batter in a clean ninth inning for his eighth save of the season.
Stuart Fairchild went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI on Friday against the Cardinals.
Fairchild had a productive day at the plate against the Cardinals on Friday. He drew a walk in the second inning before driving in a run on a base hit in the seventh. He brought one more run with a double in the eighth. The 27-year-old outfielder is hitting .234/.335/.380 with two homers and seven steals across 163 plate appearances.
Nolan Arendado went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer on Friday against the Reds.
Arenado plated the first runs of the game with a two-run blast off Ben Lively in the first inning. He later singled for his second hit of the game, ending his day with a .272/.319/.469 slash line, 12 homers, and 43 RBI across 260 plate appearances.
Austin Gomber allowed seven runs over four innings on Friday in a loss against the Padres.
Gomber was hit around for seven runs on 11 hits and two walks against the Padres. He surrendered a two-run homer to Manny Machado in the first inning. Trent Grisham took him deep for a solo shot in the second before Gary Sanchez added a two-run blast later in the frame. Gomber gave up three consecutive hits to start the fifth before he was replaced on the mound. The 29-year-old left-hander will take a bloated 7.57 ERA, 1.75 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts across 60 2/3 innings into a matchup against the Red Sox in Boston on Wednesday.
Yu Darvish allowed four runs over 5 1/3 innings on Wednesday in a win over the Rockies.
Darvish had gotten through five innings having allowed just one run on a walk and a hit in the third inning. Things got away in the sixth as he allowed a run to score on two singles and a double. Darvish's day would be done, but the inherited runners would eventually come in to score. He still came away with the win in this one while striking out six. The 36-year-old right-hander will take a 4.04 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 74 strikeouts over 69 innings into a matchup against the Red Sox in Boston next week.
Akil Baddoo was pulled from Friday's contest against the Diamondbacks due to a quad injury.
Baddoo suffered the injury while attempting to hustle out an infield single in the fourth inning. No word yet on the severity of the injury, but the Tigers can ill-afford to lose another outfielder to the injured list. Be sure to check back on his status prior to Saturday's game.
Emmanuel Rivera went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored on Friday night, helping to lead the Diamondbacks to victory over the Tigers.
Rivera led off the second inning with a single and came around to score the Diamondbacks' second run on an RBI single by Geraldo Perdomo. He then delivered an RBI double in the seventh inning and scored on a run-scoring knock by Jake McCarthy. He also drew a leadoff walk in the eighth inning and dashed around to score on an infield single by Perdomo. With the two-hit effort, Rivera is now hitting a stellar .367/.404/.490 with one homer, 15 RBI and one stolen base through his first 97 at-bats with the D'Backs.
Geraldo Perdomo went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs on Friday night as the Diamondbacks walloped the Tigers.
Perdomo smacked an RBI single off of Michael Lorenzen in the second inning to increase the Diamondbacks' lead to 2-0. He then capped off their scoring with an RBI knock off of Garrett Hill in the eighth inning, making it a 10-3 ballgame. The 23-year-old has impressed at the dish this season -- hitting .287/.389/.469 with five homers, 28 RBI and six stolen bases.
Leody Taveras hit a pair of solo homers and walked Friday against the Rays.
The Rangers had just three hits in the game, all of them homers (the other was hit by Josh Jung). Taveras has five homers, three of them coming in the last week. It's unfortunate that he's not doing more running -- he's been stuck on five steals since May 16 -- but with the way the Rangers are hitting, he offers some value anyway.
Spencer Howard gave up four runs in one-third of an inning Friday in his 2023 debut.
It was something of a surprise that the Rangers brought Howard right back to the majors after his rehab assignment, but they liked the way he threw in his two minor league relief appearances. Major league hitters, though, treated him much like they had in the past, even with his velocity up some. His career ERA stands at 7.39, which at least is quite a bit better than his current mark of 108.00.
Andrew Heaney gave up four runs -- three earned -- in five innings Friday in a loss to the Rays.
All of the earned runs came on a three-run homer from Isaac Paredes in the third. Heaney took his first loss in a month, dropping to 4-4 with a 4.14 ERA. He'll face one of his former teams, the Angels, next time out.
