Luke Raley (abdomen) remains out of the Rays lineup for the nightcap of Saturday’s twin bill against the Red Sox.
There had been optimism earlier in the day that Raley would be good to go for the second game, but apparently whatever the issue is hasn’t improved. Raley is currently undergoing further evaluation.
Justin Turner is not in the Red Sox starting lineup for the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rays.
Turner went 2-for-5 and delivered a three-run double in the first game on Saturday, so he had earned a breather in the nightcap. Masataka Yoshida will function as the designated hitter in the nightcap while Triston Casas starts at first base for the Red Sox.
Giancarlo Stanton is absent from the Yankees' starting lineup for Saturday's matchup against the Dodgers.
Yankees' manager Aaron Boone told reporters prior to Friday's game that both Josh Donaldson and Giancarlo Stanton were expected to play in two of the three games over the weekend, and it looks like Stanton's planned day off is on Saturday. Expect the slugger to return to the lineup for Sunday's series finale.
Dylan Cease allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings on Saturday in a no-decision against the Tigers.
Cease required 99 pitches (62 strikes) to work into the sixth inning in his second consecutive outing against Detroit. A sixth-inning wild pitch allowed Zach McKinstry to cross the plate for the lone tally against him in this one. He finished with six strikeouts and also issued three walks. The 27-year-old fantasy ace's strikeout stuff has returned in his last two outings, which is a positive development. He'll drag an underwhelming 4.63 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 74/32 K/BB ratio across 68 innings (13 starts) into a favorable home matchup Friday against the Marlins.
Liam Hendriks tossed a perfect seventh inning on Saturday against the Tigers.
Hendriks threw 17 pitches (nine strikes) and notched one strikeout in his second appearance since returning earlier this week to Chicago's relief mix. The 34-year-old righty is being gradually eased into high-leverage situations, but doesn't appear to be too far off from getting a save opportunity.
Andrew Benintendi went 2-for-4 with a stolen base on Saturday in the White Sox' 2-1 extra-inning win over the Tigers.
Benintendi was the lone batter for either side to record multiple hits during Saturday afternoon's low-scoring intradivional showdown at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. He also picked up his sixth stolen base of the season and scored the White Sox' lone run prior to extra innings when he crossed the plate on a Michael Lorenzen wild pitch back in the fourth inning.
Garrett Whitlock allowed four runs over 4 2/3 innings on Saturday in a no-decision against the Rays.
Whitlock took the ball for the opening contest of Saturday's doubleheader at Fenway Park and finished with five strikeouts, but also failed to pitch beyond the fifth inning for the third straight outing. The 26-year-old righty will bring a lackluster 5.61 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 20/5 K/BB ratio across 25 2/3 innings into a road tilt on Thursday against the Guardians.
Kenley Jansen fired a scoreless ninth inning on Saturday against the Rays to record his 12th save of the season.
Jansen was called upon to guard a three-run lead in the first game of Saturday's twin bill and immediately surrendered a leadoff double to Yandy Díaz. He settled down afterwards to strike out Wander Franco, Brandon Lowe and Randy Arozarena to preserve the victory.
Corey Kluber tossed a scoreless sixth inning on Saturday to collect a win in relief against the Rays.
Kluber took the ball to open the sixth inning during the first game of Saturday's twin bill against the Rays for his first regular-season relief appearance since the 2013 season. It was also the first time he's pitched for the Red Sox since May 21. The 37-year-old veteran right-hander is expected to continue pitching in relief for now.
Wander Franco went 3-for-5 with a stolen base in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader as the Rays came up short in a loss to the Red Sox.
Franco returned to Tampa Bay's lineup for the opening contest of Saturday's twin bill following a one-game absence due to a minor shoulder issue. He's up to 21 stolen bases on the season and the latest three-hit effort raises his batting average to a robust .305 through 56 games.
Justin Turner went 2-for-5 with a three-run double, leading the Red Sox to an 8-5 victory over the Rays in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Turner put the Red Sox ahead for good with a bases-clearing double to center field off lefty reliever Jalen Beeks in the sixth inning. The 38-year-old veteran has been a stabilizing force for Boston's starting lineup this season, despite not hitting for a ton of over-the-fence pop. He's batting .271/.354/.411 with 31 runs scored, six homers, 25 RBI and two stolen bases across 237 plate appearances.
Guardians transfered RHP Peyton Battenfield from the 15-day injured list to 60-day injured list.
The procedural move opens up a spot on Cleveland's 40-man roster to bring up reliever Michael Kelly ahead of Saturday's game against the Twins. Battenfield has been on the shelf since mid-May due to right shoulder inflammation and will be out until at least mid-July.
Guardians optioned RHP Hunter Gaddis to Triple-A Columbus.
Gaddis has been jettisoned to the minors with righty Triston McKenzie (shoulder) returning to make his season debut on Sunday against the Twins.
Guardians selected the contract of RHP Michael Kelly from Triple-A Columbus.
Kelly signed a minor league contract with Cleveland back in January and has earned another shot in the majors after recording a stellar 1.61 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 36/13 K/BB ratio across 22 1/3 innings (18 appearances) this season for Triple-A Columbus. The 30-year-old righty made four relief appearances last year for the Phillies in his first taste of the big leagues.
Mariners released RHP Ryder Ryan.
Ryan signed a minor league contract with the Mariners last December and is now free to pursue another opportunity after exercising the opt-out in his deal with Seattle.
Twins recalled OF Kyle Garlick from Triple-A St. Paul.
Minnesota is slated to face a handful of left-handed pitchers in the coming days, so the club has opted to go with lefty-mashing Garlick over Matt Wallner with Joey Gallo (hamstring) landing on the injured list prior to Saturday's game against Cleveland.
Diamondbacks released RHP Endrys Briceno.
Briceno signed a minor league contract last October with the Diamondbacks after excelling in the independent Atlantic League, but struggled this season across 14 relief appearances between Double-A Amarillo and Triple-A Reno.
Padres released LHP Jared Koenig.
Koenig signed a minor league contract with the Padres back in February and wound up compiling a solid 1.77 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 28/10 K/BB ratio across 20 1/3 innings (17 appearances) in the upper minors. The 29-year-old lefty made 10 appearances (five starts) last year for the Athletics. It sounds like he's been cut loose to pursue an opportunity overseas. We'll see.
Freddie Freeman (neck) is in the Dodgers' lineup for Saturday's game against the Yankees.
Freeman has been playing through some neck stiffness the last few days, so it's a positive sign that he remains in the Dodgers' lineup for Saturday's showdown in Los Angeles. The 33-year-old fantasy stalwart saw his 20-game hit streak snapped during Friday's series opener and will be looking to start a new one this evening.
Mookie Betts is at second base for Saturday's game against the Yankees.
Betts, who has homered four times over his last two games, gets the nod over rookie Miguel Vargas at second base on Saturday evening against New York. It'll be his 13th appearance at the keystone this season.
