Blue Jays recalled RHP Jay Jackson from Triple-A Buffalo.
Jackson made three relief appearances earlier this season for Toronto and provides them with some extra bullpen depth while starter Chris Bassitt is away from the club on paternity leave for the next couple days.
Tyler Stephenson is getting the day off on Saturday against the Brewers.
It's a routine day off for Stephenson, who has been scuffling at the dish recently, batting just .105 (2-for-19) in his last five games over the last week. It'll be Jonathan India getting a break from the field on Saturday afternoon at designated hitter and Curt Casali handling the catching duties.
Avisaíl García (back) has suffered a setback during his rehabilitation process.
García is being pulled off his minor league rehab assignment to head to Miami for further evaluation. According to reports, the setback is believed to be minor. There should be some clarity on his status sometime later this weekend or early next week.
Reds transferred LHP Nick Lodolo from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
Nothing has changed regarding Lodolo's recovery timeline, but the Reds needed to open up a spot on their 40-man roster, so this became the logical procedural move. The 25-year-old left-hander is aiming to return to Cincinnati's starting rotation sometime around the All-Star break after landing on the injured list last month due to left calf tendinosis.
Reds selected the contract of OF T.J. Hopkins from Triple-A Louisville.
It's not the promotion fantasy managers have been anxiously awaiting. Hopkins gets the call to provide Cincinnati with some temporary emergency outfield depth with T.J. Friedl (hamstring) landing on the injured list ahead of Saturday's game against the Brewers.
Rockies activated RHP Nick Mears from the 15-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Mears is fully recovered from a left oblique strain that sent him to the injured list a couple weeks ago and will remain stationed at Triple-A Albuquerque. The 26-year-old righty tossed a scoreless inning on Friday in his lone rehab appearance.
Rangers placed INF/OF Brad Miller on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 31, with a right oblique strain.
Miller figures to miss at least a couple weeks before returning to a bench role with the Rangers. The versatile 33-year-old has 10 hits, including one homer, in 48 at-bats over 22 games this season.
Dodgers optioned LHP Justin Bruihl to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Bruihl has been sent back to the minors to make room for Michael Grove to start on Saturday against the Yankees. The 25-year-old lefty holds a serviceable 4.41 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 13/3 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings (14 appearances) this season in the majors.
Mickey Moniak is not in the Angels' lineup on Saturday for the third straight game.
Moniak is healthy, but the Angels are going to roll with Taylor Ward and Hunter Renfroe in their corner outfield spots on Saturday afternoon against tough Astros right-hander Cristian Javier.
Angels optioned RHP Chase Silseth to Triple-A Salt Lake.
There simply isn't a role for Silseth at the moment in Los Angeles as he's made just one start and has mostly pitched in mop-up duty the last few weeks. The 23-year-old righty will presumably head back to the minors to be stretched back out as a starting option for later this season.
Angels recalled RHP José Soriano from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Soriano has had an interesting path to the majors as he was a notable prospect with the Angels before undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020. The Pirates made him the top-overall selection in the 2021 Rule 5 Draft, and he wound up making only a couple minor league appearances before undergoing another Tommy John surgery, and was eventually sent back to the Angels. The 24-year-old righty will be making his big league debut when he gets into a game for Los Angeles and has certainly earned the opportunity.
Blue Jays placed RHP Chris Bassitt on the paternity leave list.
Bassitt struck out eight batters over 7 2/3 scoreless frames on Friday night in a win over the Mets and will head to paternity leave for the next couple days. He should return in plenty of time to make his next scheduled start on Wednesday against the Astros.
Jose Altuve is not in the Astros' lineup for Saturday's contest against the Angels.
It'll be Mauricio Dubón at the keystone on Saturday afternoon against the Angels. The Astros have carefully managed Altuve's workload since returning last month from right thumb surgery and the presence of an overqualified reserve in Dubón makes it a lot easier. He should return for Sunday's series finale.
Francisco Álvarez is not in the Mets' lineup for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays.
Álvarez, who has started back-to-back games for the Mets, takes a seat on Saturday afternoon with Tomás Nido handling the catching duties.
Cal Raleigh is not in the Mariners' lineup for Saturday's showdown against the Rangers.
Raleigh gets a breather for the second time in the last four games on Saturday afternoon with Tom Murphy handling the catching duties against the Rangers.
Jack Suwinski is not in the Pirates' lineup for Saturday's game against the Cardinals.
Suwinski and Ji Hwan Bae are the regulars getting a break on Saturday afternoon with lefty Jordan Montgomery on the mound for the Cardinals. It'll be Mark Mathias and Connor Joe in the corner outfield spots with Rodolfo Castro at second base.
Yankees released OF Kole Calhoun.
New York opted to grant Calhoun his release, rather than add him to their active roster, after he opted out of his minor league contract earlier this week. The 35-year-old veteran outfielder should be able to latch on somewhere else after hitting well this season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Angeles released C Meibrys Viloria.
Viloria signed a minor league contract last month with the Angels after appearing in 10 games for the Guardians earlier this season. The 26-year-old backstop should be able to find a new opportunity somewhere else as organizational catching depth.
Mariners transferred RHP Easton McGee from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
The procedural move opens up a spot on Seattle's 40-man roster on Saturday for pitching prospect Bryan Woo to come up from Double-A Arkansas for his big league debut. McGee underwent Tommy John surgery last month and isn't expected to return until sometime during the 2024 campaign.
Pirates designated INF/OF Chris Owings for assignment.
Owings has been jettisoned from the Pirates' roster after getting into 10 contests this season and batting just .160 (4-for-25) with 12 strikeouts. The versatile 31-year-old journeyman will presumably head back to Triple-A Indianapolis, if he winds up clearing waivers, but does have the ability to elect free agency as well.
