Lars Nootbaar (back) is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis.

Jun 14   12:31 PM

Nootbaar should return early next week if all goes well, though that's far from a certainty with back issues. He's been on the IL since May 30.

Packy Naughton is off to get a second opinion after leaving his last rehab appearance with forearm pain.

Jun 14   12:31 PM

Naughton has been sidelined for two months with a forearm strain. It's possible he's going to require season-ending surgery.

Willi Castro is on the bench in a third straight game Wednesday against the Brewers.

Jun 14   12:31 PM

Castro started eight in a row before sitting the last three, but Joey Gallo's return has knocked him out of the lineup for now and things won't get any better after Byron Buxton is activated.

Blake Sabol is sitting for the third consecutive game Wednesday versus the Cardinals.

Jun 14   12:31 PM

The Giants are facing a lefty today, so it makes sense that Sabol isn't in the lineup. However, had started 19 of the Giants' previous 21 games before taking a seat Monday. He did come off the bench after J.D. Davis got hurt last night, finishing 1-for-2 with a sac fly and a walk. The Giants should keep trying to work him in at other spots with Patrick Bailey doing more of the catching.

Trevor Rosenthal, who was trying to make it back to the majors with the Tigers, will undergo elbow surgery next week.

Jun 14   11:57 AM

The team is calling it a UCL reconstruction revision, which will cost him at least the rest of this year. If it's a full Tommy John, he'll miss much of next year, too. It's been very tough sledding for Rosenthal of late, as he needed thoracic outlet surgery in 2021. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2020, and he had thrown just three innings in the minors for the Tigers this season.

Triple-A Toledo's Ryan Kreidler recently underwent core muscle surgery.

Jun 14   11:57 AM

He'll probably be out for at least another month. Kreidler opened the season in the majors, going 2-for-18 over the first two weeks. He was hitting .271/.352/.479 in 14 Triple-A games.

Braden Bristo will be the Tigers' 27th man Wednesday in the doubleheader against the Braves.

Jun 14   11:57 AM

Bristo has made one appearance for the Rays (three scoreless) and one for the Tigers (one unearned run in two innings) this season. He'll be available in middle relief today.

The Braves will make Dylan Dodd their 27th man Wednesday and start him in Game 2 of the doubleheader against the Tigers.

Jun 14   11:57 AM

Dodd has a 6.64 ERA in four major league starts this season, which is actually better than his 7.07 ERA in Triple-A. He's expected to return to the minors after Game 2.

Giants recalled INF David Villar from Triple-A Sacramento.

Jun 14   11:57 AM

Villar is playing third base and batting eighth Wednesday in place of the ailing J.D. Davis. He's hit just .135/.222/.292 in 108 PA in the majors this season, so he could take a backseat to Casey Schmitt for the most part.

Brewers designated RHP Cam Robinson for assignment.

Jun 14   11:25 AM

Robinson, a reliever added to the Brewers' 40-man after last season, has had a miserable time this year, posting an 8.55 ERA in 20 innings between Double- and Triple-A. In part because he's walked 20 batters, he's already allowed more runs (21) than he did in 65 innings (19) last year.

Nabil Crismatt (hip) gave up a run in an inning for Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.

Jun 14   11:25 AM

The good news is that Crismatt's velocity is coming back after being down at the beginning of the year. The bad is that he has a 6.94 ERA over 11 2/3 innings on his rehab assignment anyway. He's out of options, so the Padres will soon have to choose whether to restore him to their bullpen or DFA him.

Brewers activated LHP Eric Lauer from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Nashville.

Jun 14   11:25 AM

The Brewers are getting Wade Miley back this weekend, so they've decided there's no room for Lauer right now. That Lauer gave up 11 runs -- seven earned -- over 4 2/3 innings in two rehab starts made it a pretty easy call. Lauer had been rehabbing a left shoulder impingement.

Brewers optioned INF Abraham Toro to Triple-A Nashville.

Jun 14   11:25 AM

The Brewers have developed a fondness for Andruw Monasterio, so Toro never got much of a chance, even after going 2-for-4 with a homer in his first start May 31. He wound up 4-for-8 in two starts and three appearances off the bench in his 16 days in the majors.

Brewers signed OF Raimel Tapia to a one-year contract.

Jun 14   11:25 AM

Tapia will be in line for some outfield starts against righties, but he'll probably be utilized more as a pinch-hitter, particularly with Jesse Winker due back in the coming days. The 29-year-old Tapia hit .264/.333/.368 in 97 plate appearances for the Red Sox before being let go last week.

Quinn Preister allowed two runs -- one earned -- in 6 2/3 innings Tuesday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Jun 14   10:56 AM

It seemed like the demotion of Roansy Contreras to the bullpen might get Priester an opportunity, but the Pirates will instead turn to Osvado Bido for now. Priester has been inconsistent of late, especially in walking 15 batters over 19 1/3 innings in his last four starts. Four of those came last night, though he was quite good otherwise. He's 7-3 with a 4.29 ERA and a 62/29 K/BB ratio in 63 innings overall.

Samad Taylor finished 3-for-3 with a homer and a walk for Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday.

Jun 14   10:56 AM

And a steal, of course. Taylor has 31 of those in 37 attempts this season. He's 12-for-27 with 10 walks and five steals in his last eight games, pushing him up to .302/.403/.451 for the season. The Royals might give him a look in Michael Massey's place sometime soon.

Triple-A Oklahoma City's Michael Busch homered for the fourth time in five games Tuesday.

Jun 14   10:56 AM

Busch slumped for three weeks after being sent down by the Dodgers last month, but he's come back with a vengeance in June, hitting .533 with 10 extra-base hits and 15 RBI in seven games. He's done that while starting exclusively at third base; he was seeing more time at second than third previously. It doesn't sound like Max Muncy is going to land on the IL with his hamstring issue, but if that changes, Busch would be in line to take his place.

Jesse Winker (neck) went 3-for-4 with a homer and a walk for Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday.

Jun 14   10:39 AM

Winker, on the IL since May 30, is ready to be back in the majors. He's gone 5-for-13 with three homers and four walks in five rehab games.

Keaton Winn allowed one run over four innings on Wednesday against the Cardinals and was credited with a save in his major league debut.

Jun 14   10:39 AM

Winn came on with the Giants leading by a touchdown and wound up allowing just five baserunners over four frames to collect an ultra-rare four-inning save in his big league debut. The 25-year-old righty figures to continue pitching in middle relief for the Giants.

Beau Brieske (elbow) pitched a hitless innings in his first appearance for Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.

Jun 14   10:39 AM

Brieske previously pitched a couple of scoreless innings for high-A West Michigan on his rehab assignment. A starter previously in his career, it looked like he'd be in the bullpen before he got hurt this spring and it appears that he'll remain there upon being activated. With his velocity up a bit, he could help the Tigers as a short reliever.
