Trevor Story (elbow) told reporters on Monday that he's hoping to be able to play shortstop at the big league level by August.
He also didn't discount the possibility of returning as a designated hitter at some point during the month of July. Story recently increased his throwing distance and intensity -- and he has been seen taking ground balls and making throws from the shortstop position. It sounds like he should return at some point around the All-Star break barring any setbacks in his recovery along the way.
Joc Pederson is not in the Giants' starting lineup for Monday night's tilt against the Cardinals.
With left-hander Matthew Liberatore toeing the slab for the Cardinals on Monday night, Pederson finds himself situated on the Giants' bench -- at least to start the ballgame. He's coming off a massive 4-for-4 effort with a pair of home runs on Sunday afternoon and is hitting a terrific .282/.390/.544 with seven homers and 24 RBI through his first 32 games on the year.
Mike Ford is absent from the Mariners' starting lineup for Monday night's showdown against the Marlins.
Ford has been functioning as the club's regular designated hitter since he was promoted at the beginning of June, but he'll get a breather in this one. AJ Pollock will start in his place and bat sixth against Marlins' left-hander Jesus Luzardo on Monday evening in Seattle.
Joey Wendle is not in the Marlins' starting lineup for Monday night's affair against the Mariners in Seattle.
It looks to be just a regular day of rest for the 33-year-old infielder. Jon Berti will start in his place at shortstop on Monday night and will bat seventh for the Marlins against right-hander Bryce Miller and the Mariners.
JJ Bleday is riding the Athletics' bench for the second consecutive game on Monday night against the Rays.
There haven't been any sort of rumblings of any injury or illness at play, though it's possible that Bleday could be fighting his way through something. Brent Rooker will start at designated hitter for the Athletics again on Monday night with Seth Brown and Ramon Laureano covering the corner outfield spots. Bleday is slashing a woeful .209/.314/.374 with three homers, five RBI and a 21/14 K/BB ratio in 105 plate appearances on the season.
Jacob deGrom underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Monday.
The 34-year-old right-hander will miss the remainder of the 2023 season and at least the first few months of the 2024 season while recovering from the procedure. He has already come back from the procedure stronger and better than ever once, and if there's anyone who can do it again it's certainly deGrom. He finished his first season with the Rangers posting a 2.67 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and a 45/4 K/BB ratio over 30 1/3 innings in his six starts.
Diamondbacks activated OF Kyle Lewis from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Reno.
Lewis had been on the injured list since early April due to an undisclosed illness. He had been taking at-bat on a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Reno since mid-May -- where he has hit .237/.328/.458 with four homers, 14 RBI and a 19/7 K/BB ratio over 67 plate appearances in 14 games. With his rehab window coming to a close, the Diamondbacks were forced to make a decision on him, and it sounds like he'll continue to see everyday at-bats at the Triple-A level for the time being.
Diamondbacks designated LHP Anthony Misiewicz for assignment.
It's been a busy week for the 28-year-old southpaw. He was activated from the injured list and optioned to Triple-A Reno on Saturday, and now with Carson Kelly returning from the 60-day injured list and the team needing to free up a spot on the 40-man roster on Monday, he gets the boot from there as well. Misiewicz has appeared in seven games for the big league club this season -- registering a 5.63 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and a 6/3 K/BB ratio over eight innings. There's a chance that he could attract some interest on waivers from a bullpen-needy club.
Gio Urshela was held out of the Angels lineup again on Monday due to tightness in his back.
Urshela was scratched from Friday's lineup due to the same issue before returning to action on Saturday. So far it has been a day-to-day situation, though if it continues to linger he may wind up requiring a trip on the injured list. Jared Walsh will start at first base and bat eighth for the Angels on Monday evening against the Rangers.
LaMonte Wade Jr. is not in the Giants' starting lineup for Monday's matchup against the Cardinals.
The Giants' catalyst will take a seat with left-hander Matthew Liberatore on the hill for the Cardinals. He's having a nice season atop the Giants' lineup -- hitting .273/.413/.454 with eight homers, 20 RBI and a pair of stolen bases through 62 games on the season.
Diamondbacks activated C Carson Kelly from the 60-day injured list.
Kelly had been shelved since late March due to a fractured right forearm. The 28-year-old backstop appeared in eight games at Triple-A Reno on a minor league rehab assignment -- slashing .345/.412/.448 with no homers, four RBI and an 8/3 K/BB ratio in 34 plate appearances. Jose Herrera was optioned to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move, meaning Kelly will take over as the primary backup behind Gabriel Moreno.
Diamondbacks optioned C Jose Herrera to Triple-A Reno.
With Carson Kelly returning from the 60-day injured list on Monday, there was no need for the Diamondbacks to carry a third catcher on the active roster, which means that unfortunately Herrera gets moved back to Triple-A. Herrera held his own during his time with the Diamondbacks -- hitting .255/.344/.327 with zero homers, six RBI and a 19/8 K/BB ratio in 68 plate appearances.
Diamondbacks activated LHP Joe Mantiply from the 15-day injured list.
The 32-year-old southpaw had been off to a terrific start for the Diamondbacks before suffering a right hamstring strain in early May -- registering a 2.35 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and an 8/0 K/BB ratio over his first 7 2/3 innings. He'll add another capable arm to the late-inning mix for manager Torey Lovullo. Kevin Ginkel was optioned to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move on Monday.
Diamondbacks optioned RHP Kevin Ginkel to Triple-A Reno.
With Joe Mantiply returning from the injured list on Monday, someone needed to go to make room in the Diamondbacks' bullpen and unfortunately it looks like Ginkel drew the short straw this time around. It's a surprising call as the 29-year-old hurler sports an outstanding 2.76 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 26/9 K/BB ratio over 29 1/3 innings out of the bullpen this season -- and hasn't allowed a run over five innings in the month of June. It shouldn't be long before he gets another chance with the big league club.
Mickey Moniak is not in the Angels' starting lineup for Monday's series opener against the Rangers.
Even with a right-hander on the mound, the Angels will be rolling with Taylor Ward in center field as he seems to have gained back a stronger share of the platoon for the Halos. Even though Moniak has slumped lately, he's still slashing a terrific .302/.333/.667 with five homers, 12 RBI and two stolen bases in his first 66 plate appearances with the big league club.
Kerry Carpenter is at designated hitter and batting third on Monday against the Braves.
Carpenter has registered a staggering eight hits in 12 at-bats over three games since returning last Friday from the injured list. The Tigers will attempt to snap a nine-game losing streak on Monday evening against the Braves at Comerica Park.
Joe Doyle of Future Stars Series reports that Mariners are calling up right-hander Ty Adcock for Monday's series opener against the Marlins.
Adcock appears to be the corresponding move with Penn Murfee (elbow) almost certain to land on the injured list ahead of Monday's game. The 26-year-old righty has posted a strong 1.35 ERA, 0.55 WHIP and 22/3 K/BB ratio across 20 innings (18 appearances) this season between Double-A Arkansas and High-A Everett.
Trevor Story (elbow) threw from a distance of 120 feet on Monday at Fenway Park.
There was some discussion last week that Story could return sooner than originally anticipated in a designated hitter-exclusive role, so it's a positive sign that he was spotted fielding grounders and making throws from shortstop ahead of Monday's series opener against the Rockies. There isn't an official timetable for his return, but it looks like he could be back sometime in the near future.
Mason Englert will start on Monday against the Braves.
It'll be a bullpen game for the Tigers on Monday against Atlanta with Englert making his first career start in an opener capacity. The 23-year-old Rule 5 pick has survived this season in the majors, posting a respectable 5.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 25/12 K/BB ratio across 36 innings (21 appearances).
Brewers promoted RHP prospect Abner Uribe to Triple-A Nashville.
Uribe finds himself on the cusp of the majors after recording a microscopic 1.80 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 28/9 K/BB ratio across 15 innings (15 appearances) this season for Double-A Biloxi. The 22-year-old fireballer boasts an upper-90's fastball that regularly clocks in as high as 102 mph.
