Red Sox released OF Raimel Tapia.

Jun 11   5:11 PM

The 29-year-old outfielder was designated for assignment earlier in the week. He passed through waivers unclaimed, but refused his outright assignment to Triple-A Worcester, making him a free agent. Tapia slashed .264/.333/.368 with one homer and six swipes in 97 plate appearances with the Red Sox. It shouldn't take him long to land on his feet elsewhere, a team like the Tigers and their plethora of injuries in the outfield could be one potential destination.

Carlos Carrasco yielded two runs in 4 2/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Pirates.

Jun 11   4:24 PM

The runs came on a solo homer, a double and an RBI single in the fourth. The Mets left Carrasco in too long last time out, so they employed a quicker hook today, taking him out with two on and two outs in the fifth. Lefty Josh Walker replaced him and struck out Jack Suwinski to end the frame. The Mets offense, though, never did get anything going the rest of the way.

David Bednar recorded his 14th save with a scoreless ninth against the Mets on Sunday.

Jun 11   4:24 PM

Bednar gave up a couple of runs while mopping up last time out, but he's been sterling in his save chances. His lone blown save came two months ago, and he would up with the win in that game anyway.

Mitch Keller limited the Mets to one run and two hits over seven innings for a victory Sunday.

Jun 11   4:24 PM

The lone run came on Jeff McNeil's homer in the top of the fourth. Keller struck out seven and walked two in the 106-pitch outing. It was a nice rebound for him after he gave up 15 runs in his previous three starts. He's 8-2 with a 3.41 ERA for the year.

Willie Calhoun will remain as the Yankees' leadoff hitter after being plunked on the elbow during live batting practice on Sunday.

Jun 11   4:03 PM

Phew. Calhoun told reporters that the ball hit a nerve in his elbow but felt fine after a few minutes. The 28-year-old has seen regular playing time since Aaron Judge landed on the injured list and is hitting .246/.316/.426 with five homers across 136 plate appearances.

Scott McGough picked up his second save of the season -- recording the final two outs against the Tigers to preserve a two-run lead.

Jun 11   3:26 PM

Andrew Chafin got the first out of the ninth before turning the game over to McGough. He threw ten pitches -- eight strikes -- as the Diamondbacks came back to sweep the Tigers on Sunday. Miguel Castro is still viewed as the Diamondbacks closer, but McGough could see a save chance or two before the end of the season.

Anthony Volpe is not in the Yankees' starting lineup for Sunday's showdown against the Red Sox.

Jun 11   3:26 PM

Volpe has been mired in a 10-for-78 slump since the middle of May, and he will start Sunday's game on the bench. The Yankees have stuck with the youngster, but that could change if his slump continues. Oswaldo Cabrera will bat ninth and play shortstop in his absence.

Alex Bregman went 0-for-4 and struck out three times against the Guardians on Sunday.

Jun 11   3:26 PM

Bregman isn't really striking out any more than usual on the whole, but this makes five three-strikeout games for him this season. It's rather odd, considering that he had just nine such games entering 2023. He struck out three times once out of every 90 games played in his first seven seasons. Now he's done it five times in 65 games.

Brandon Bielak lost Sunday after giving up five runs in five-plus innings to the Guardians.

Jun 11   3:26 PM

Bielak gave up a pair of homers and nearly surrendered a third, with Tyler Freeman coming up just a tad short on a double to left in the sixth. Bielak was fortunate that both Freeman and Gabriel Arias, who walked, were stranded after he left with no outs in the sixth, but he still fell to 3-3 with a 4.01 ERA. He could be in danger of being replaced by Ronel Blanco if he's no better next time out.

Josh Bell went 3-for-4 with a homer and a double Sunday versus the Astros.

Jun 11   3:26 PM

It's been a disappointing season thus far for Bell, but at least he's fared a whole lot better than his Astros counterpart. He and José Abreu were the top two first baseman available in free agency last winter. Abreu, who got a three-year, $58.5 million deal, has a .564 OPS at the moment. Bell received $33 million for two years, with an opt out after one year. He's batting .236/.332/.375 through 241 plate appearances.

Adam Duvall is not in the Red Sox starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Yankees.

Jun 11   3:26 PM

It is a routine off day for Duvall, who returned from the injured list on Friday. The 34-year-old slugger should return to the Red Sox lineup Monday when Boston begins a three-game series against the Rockies in Fenway Park. Jarren Duran will lead off and patrol center field in his absence.

Astros general manager Dana Brown on SportsTalk790 said that the Astros are shifting back to a five-man rotation.

Jun 11   3:26 PM

Instead of heading to Triple-A Sugar Land to continue working as a starter, Blanco will return to the bullpen as a long reliever. Blanco made two starts for the Astros and struggled with his command, walking 13 percent of batters he faced.

Jason Foley could not finish the job and blew his second game in a tough loss to the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Jun 11   3:01 PM

Foley didn't stand a chance against the white-hot Diamondbacks lineup. The 27-year-old coughed up four runs on four hits and didn't strike out a batter. Before Sunday's blowup, it appeared that Foley had taken the role of Tigers closer from Alex Lange, but Sunday's outing just muddied the waters.

Joey Wentz allowed one hit, walked two, and allowed two runs to score but did not factor in the 7-5 loss to the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Jun 11   2:45 PM

Before the game on Sunday, the Tigers announced that Will Vest would pitch as the opener against the white-hot Diamondbacks, with Wentz being used as a follower. The second inning started off with a bang as he walked Evan Longoria before allowing a two-run homer to Pavin Smith. He settled down after that and finished with eight swinging strikes on 62 pitches. If he remains in the rotation, he will face the Twins on the road on Friday.

Zac Gallen was lit up for five runs in 5 2/3 innings by the Tigers but did not factor into the decision on Sunday.

Jun 11   2:45 PM

Gallen's velocity was noticeably down Sunday, and he surrendered his first run after allowing back-to-back singles to Kerry Carpenter and Javier Báez. The Tigers would tack on another run after Báez smacked a sacrifice fly to center field, which allowed Spencer Torkelson to score. He was taken out in the fifth inning after giving up a walk to Jonathan Schoop and a single to Jake Marisnick. With this lousy outing, Gallen's ERA jumped to an atrocious 5.79 mark when pitching on the road. He will look to bounce back against the Guardians at home on Friday.

Angels manager Phil Nevin told reporters that Mike Trout will miss one game, likely Tuesday, in their upcoming four-game series against the Rangers.

Jun 11   2:45 PM

Nevin said that the team does not want the veteran outfielder to play four games on the turf in Texas. Mickey Moniak will likely take his place in center field while the superstar rests.

Astros general manager Dana Brown said on SportsTalk790 that Yordan Alvarez remains with a timetable to return to the Astros lineup.

Jun 11   2:45 PM

Brown said his return "is still up in the air a little bit, but it will take a week at least to get a feel for how long it's going to be." Oblique injuries are tricky and can wreak even the most firm of injury timelines. Mauricio Dubón will likely see a boost in playing time with the slugger on the injured list.

LaMonte Wade Jr. is not in the Giant's starting lineup for Sunday's contest against the Cubs.

Jun 11   2:19 PM

It appears to be a day off for the 29-year-old first baseman. Wade Jr is having a solid season at the plate, hitting .273/.413/.454 with eight homers and 32 runs scored as primarily the leadoff hitter for San Francisco. He should return to the lineup Monday when the Giants begin a three-game series against the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Anthony Rendon is not in the Angels' lineup for Sunday's showdown against the Mariners.

Jun 11   1:43 PM

Sunday was a scheduled day off for the 33-year-old veteran. While he isn't showing any power, Rendon still knows how to put the bat on the ball and is hitting .276 across 145 plate appearances. Luis Rengifo will play third base and bat seventh in his absence.

Seiya Suzuki is not in the Cubs' starting lineup for Sunday's showdown against the Giants.

Jun 11   1:43 PM

It will be the second game in a row that the talented 28-year-old outfielder will miss. The team has not announced that he is suffering from an injury or illness. Christopher Morel will start in right field and bat third in his absence.
